Meeting animal nutritional requirements is extremely important in maintaining acceptable performance of breeding, and of raising healthy animals. From a practical point of view, a nutritional program should ensure adequate mineral and vitamin intake through a supplementation program that corrects deficiencies in available forage. The proper balance of protein and acid metabolism, energy transformation, complex carbohydrates, essential fatty acids, vitamins, and all nutritionally important minerals, is needed to create a successful nutritional program. Inefficient nutrient use in animal care, from livestock farms to fish farms, is financially and environmentally costly. It not only hurts animal growth, health, and well-being, but it may also affect the safety and quality of food products and possibly result in excessive environmental pollution.
An increasing amount of information has been accumulated that highlight the need for higher levels of the many nutrients needed to improve and maintain the ability of an animal's immune system to cope with infection. Nutritional requirements for growth, feed efficiency, gestation and lactation do not necessarily mean that those levels will be adequate for normal immunity and high resistance to diseases.
It is said that "Good nutrition can prevent disease, Good nutrition can cure disease." The food an animal eats should provide all of the nutritional components which are necessary for the organs and systems of a healthy body to perform in harmonious unison. A properly functioning body does an amazing job of preventing disease and promoting healing, and to do this it requires the energies and nutrients of a well-balanced diet. In terms of finding the proper diet for our animal companions, we must learn to look beyond our own needs, opinions, and agendas to address the natural needs of the animals in our care.
Our soil, plants, and especially commercial foods, are drastically deficient in key nutrients. Scientists theorize that mineral deficiencies subject both humans and animals to more diseases, aging, sickness and destruction of our physical well-being; more than any other factor in personal health. Animals need a variety of nutrients to meet their basic needs. These nutrients include fats and carbohydrates that provide energy, proteins that furnish amino acids, vitamins that serve as co-factors for enzymes and perform other functions, ions required for water balance and for nerve and muscle function, and selected elements that are incorporated into certain molecules synthesized by cells. To determine the levels of nutrients that are needed to sustain normal activities, researchers monitor the relationship between nutrient intake, the levels of nutrients maintained in the body, and overall health. To determine how nutrition can affect athletic performance, researchers alter the intake of specific nutrients and assess how athletes respond.
